Dowry Deaths A Social Tragedy

Marriages are made in heaven indeed, but dowry death, murder-suicide and bride burning are symptoms of peculiar social maladies, which have spawned like a "Black Plague". The word 'dowry' has been defined in The Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 which states that dowry means any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly by one party to the other party in a marriage to. If it is shown that soon before the death of a woman such woman has been subjected to cruelty or harassment for, or in connection with, any demand for dowry, the court shall presume that such a person has caused dowry death under section 304B, Indian Penal Code. Now cruelty as mentioned here above mean any willful conduct which is of such a nature as is likely to drive the woman to commit suicide or to cause grave injury or danger to life, or harassment to coerce her or any other person related to her to meet demand. Cruelty includes both physical and mental tortur...

My 2008 New year Resolution

SAY NO TO CANCEROUS CHINESE FOOD No, this is not my resolution of dieting. But my resolve of not becoming a cancer patient by consuming Chinese delicacies from eateries in India. In a shocking revelation from a reliable source its learnt that Ajina moto or Monosodium Glutamate which is a common ingredient of chinese food is supposed to be one of the main factors of cancer in people consuming them for over a period of time. A study on 134 cancer patients suffering from stomach cancer by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Cancer Reaserch Institute has found that more than 50% of them had a history of consuming Chinese from the road side eateries that can be found everywhere in India. Why do these small and medium sized eateries use Ajina moto or Monosodium Glutamate inspite of it being banned by WHO ( World Health Organisation) way back in 2004? This substance enhances the taste of the food . Apart from enhancing the taste it also leads to stimulation which results in excessive secretion of ...

Left front and Bengal

Image
The success of the left front government in West Bengal is a much discussed and debated issue all across the world. Amidst a worldwide decay of communism as a distinctive political way of governing a state, how a communist party has been able to carry on with its triumphs in a province of a country like India, is a matter of surprise and inquisition to any outsider. Critics have often designated the reign as more of a quantitative success (30 years) than a qualitative one. But to understand the vibes and repercussions of a highly sensitive and politically conscious people like the Bengalis truly, one has to take a much closer and all the more analytic look at the state, the party and its background. A Ray of Hope: prison children of Jharkhand

Image
On a usually relaxed March morning at the Ranchi Zoo the visitors suddenly got to see an unusually enthusiastic crowd of juveniles, cheering at every animal, and more unusually, at even the most ordinary of snacks, like peanuts and corns. They did not look like the normal excursion teams from schools. Neither did they look like destitute orphans from remote homes. They looked like as if from some different world… Thy actually were children from a different world. A mundane, melancholy world that survives in absolute seclusion. They were children of the inmates imprisoned in the jails of Jharkhand. These children have been refused refuge everywhere else, and have no other option but to live in the jails with either of their parents, or both. Some of them were even born inside the jails, and have been spending their childhood ever since in a way most of us would be terrified even to imagine about ourselves, or our own children. But, as a matter of fact, the only difference between them a...

Kolkata- 'THE CITY OF JOY'

Image
One of the largest and most vibrant city of modern India is the CITY OF JOY, namely Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta. This relatively modern city on the Eastern bank of Hoogly river has a population of almost 4.5 million and over 14 million including the recent extensions making it the third largest urban agglomeration in India. This city served as the capital of British India , till the capital was shifted to N. Delhi in the year 1911. Once the centre of modern science, education, politics and social reforms it suffered serious set backs during and after partion of India and Indian Independence for various reasons including influx of refugees from Bangladesh . With its glorious history of revolution, trade unionism, education, Kolkata is always referred to as a city of intellectuals and also called the cultaral capital of India . Considering the rich cultural heritage of the Indian subcontinent, it’s really unique to be known as the cultural capital of India . Name:- ...

Rizwanur Rehman ! A sad end at the hands of Kolkata Police (1)

I write my views on the incident of Rizwanur in kolkata. My views are entirely my personal views and I never ever intend to hurt the feeling of a already grief stricken family. From the reports on the media I view the incident a bit differently from what the general people see it. I see no fault of Mr. Todi . Well I don't intend to sound like I am defending Todi, But if we consider and asses his deeds ( alleged actions and or conspiracy ) in the backdrop of the present socio economic and communal scenario any one of us would have done the same thing if it was within our reach. Now of course the logical question comes as to what exactly are the allegations against him? As per the media reports the broad allegation is that he conspired and got his son in law killed. Well I believe he is sensible enough not to try to plot a murder in details all by himself keeping in mind his financial status and business acumen and also his tactics to use the Police. what he did was quite logical, ...
