Great souls have come to mankind to uplift their lives and the way to lead it. They have always inspired mankind to master the art of living in a way to stay close to purity and happiness. Sri Loknath Baba was one such eminent personality who still glitters in million of Bengali hearts. Amongst a few – a very few semi-legendary Hindu saints, who marked their names all across India and even abroad, Sri Loknath Baba was the one.
Born on Janmastami (the birthday the Lord Krishna) in the year 1730 to a Bramhin family, just a couple of miles away from Kolkata, in a village of Chaurasi Chakla, Baba Lokenath Brahmachari grew up in the simplest way possible. His father Ramnarayan Ghosal and mother Kamaladevi soon realized that their little Loknath was a bit too different from the rest of the boys in the society. It was the very dawn of his life that Loknath initiated to the service of the Almighty and continued serving God till the last drop of his life. Pandit Bhagwan Ganguli, a saint, who used to reside in a nearby village of Kochuya became little Loknath's guru and taught him Shastras. Gradually he entered into an eternal world and sacrificed all the general comforts of life. At the age of 11 years Loknath stepped out towards the forest holding his Gurus hand and stayed there of 25 years, serving his Guru selflessly and practicing Ashtanga Yoga and Hatha Yoga. After this Baba Lokenath Brahmachari went to the Himalayas for meditation in nude. After nearly five decades of meditation he attained enlightenment at the age of ninety years.
This seven feet tall saint with skeletal structure, marked his name all over the country and his teaching were endeared by the common mass of the society. His precious preaching of love, devotion and faith in the Almighty have turned out to be the life style of millions of people across the nation. He said: "I have seen only My self. I am bound by my own karma. The materialistic world is bound by the tongue and the sex organ. He who can restrain these two is fit to attain enlightenment".
