Around 1516, Guru Nanak reached the region while traveling through Tibet and the Himalayas. According to local tradition, the people were troubled by a demon who lived on the hill above. Upset by Guru Nanak’s presence and influence, the demon rolled a massive boulder down toward him. Instead of causing harm, the rock softened upon contact. The imprint of Guru Nanak’s back is believed to have remained in it.

Enraged, the demon came down to confront him. But seeing the Guru unharmed, he realized his mistake, repented, and asked for forgiveness.

Rediscovery and establishment

During construction work on the Leh–Nimu road in 1973, workers discovered the sacred stone. Recognizing its significance, the Indian Army established the Gurudwara, which it continues to maintain with discipline and devotion.
