Incentive spirometer  is a medical device used for the patients who have problem in breathing, mainly in functioning of lungs. The process is known as incentive spirometry. This device mainly measures the lung capacity. This device was invented in the year 1813. In patients who have undergone thoracic surgery measuring of their lung capacity is very important as to ensure the proper functioning of the lungs.  This procedure is done to re-enforce a planned program of inspiratory manoeuvres and gradually regain their post-operative condition. It is also done in patients with rib injury to exercise and expand their thoracic cavity. While breathing in the device a back pressure which pops open the alveoli.
